The value of water licences traded in Australia during 2007 – 2008 was $1.6 billion and trading increased in value 71% to $2.74 billion in 2008 – 2009.

Water trading can occur with surface (river) water as well as ground (bore) water.  Water can be traded on a permanent or temporary basis.
